CURRICULUM-TO-GO BOXES

These boxes contain the lesson plans, instructions, and materials necessary for an easy-to-teach class on various construction topics for students ranging from 5th to 10th grade in a compact, easy-to-transport package. Created by students of the Haskell & Irene Lemon Construction Science Division of the University of Oklahoma‘s Christopher C. Gibbs School of Architecture, these boxes are the product of a grant administered by TEXO Foundation’s College Outreach Committee.

5th Grade - Construction Process

Covers English 23 A: brainstorm, consult with others, decide upon a topic, and formulate open-ended questions to address the major research topic. Challenge students to critically think about the process of construction as a series of steps or events rather that a continuous event. Students will complete activities to remain engaged and create a response to what they have learned upon completion of the lesson. Video, laminated sheets, matching activity.

5th Grade - Communication

Covers English 27, listening and speaking/listening. Student us comprehension skills to listen attentively to other in formal and informal settings. Show students the importance of communication skills involved with construction management. Video, cup activity, reflection.

5th Grade - Electrical Circuits

Covers Science 112.16 Students learn about the physical properties of matter, including magnetism, mass, physical state of matter, relative density, solubility in water and the ability to conduct or insulate electrical and thermal energy. Video, circuit activity.

5th Grade - Estimating & Scales

Covers Social Studies 113.16 (b) (6) (a) apply geographic tools, including grid systems, legends, symbols, scales and compass roses to construct and interpret maps. Learn about construction estimation, how scale is used in construction documents, and how to estimate the price of a project. Group activity and cost estimate.

6th Grade - Communication

Covers English 26, listening and speaking/listening, students follow and give oral instruction that include multiple action steps. Show students the importance of communication skills involved with construction management. Video, cup activity, reflection

7th Grade - Carpentry

Covers CTE 130.43 covers artistry and intelligence used by carpenters and physics of swinging a hammer. Students will learn about careers in carpentry as well as have hands on experience of swinging a hammer and driving a nail.

8th Grade - Mechanical Contracting

Covers Math 111.28 (b) (6) and 111.28 (a) (1) Show how important a mechanical contractor is and the benefits of becoming one. Activity will be calculating the amount of buts needed to heat or cool the classroom. Students will use a laser measure to get the actual square footage of the room for the calculation. PowerPoint, activities, laser tape measures.

8th Grade - Technology in Construction

Covers Technology applications 1C, 3C, 4F, 6A Inform the student s of new technologies being used by Construction managers. Students will be shown videos, engage in activities and participate in a Virtual Scavenger Hunt.

9th Grade - Concrete

Covers 111.41 how geometry is applied in everyday life. The goal of this lesson is to educate students on construction industry and pique their interest in the specific field of concrete. PowerPoint, writing materials and PVC pipe.

10th Grade - Concrete

Covers 111.41 how geometry is applied in everyday life. The goal of this lesson is to educate students on construction industry and pique their interest in the specific field of concrete. PowerPoint, writing materials and PVC pipe.

10th Grade - Electric Transformers

Covers Physics 112.39 students will learn about jobs involved in electrical distribution and how electricity gets from a power plant to the end user in a safe way. PowerPoint, transformers and volt meters.
